Welcome to Indian Summer School on Cellular Automata 2025

The 5th Edition of an Internship Program on Cellular Automata: Theory and Applications

Last Date of Registration : 5th May, 2025
Program Duration: 19th May 2025 - 18th July 2025

About

The Indian Summer School on Cellular Automata was started in 2021 as a virtual internship program to train young cellular automata enthusiasts from multi-disciplinary domains on the theory and applications of cellular automata. Four previous versions of the summer school, 2021 , 2022 , 2023 and 2024 have been successfully completed. This free internship programme which lasts for almost two months, is rigorously research based and follows strict evaluation criteria.

The guidelines for Indian Summer School on Cellular Automata 2025

  • The UG/PG/PhD students or such degree holders but not employed can attend.
  • A PhD student needs to submit a consent letter from the supervisor and the supervisor has to agree to co-mentor his/her project in this Summer School.
  • The decision of the School, regarding selection of participants in all phases of the programme, is accepted to be final.
  • The duration of this online Summer School is two months. Its starting date is May 19, 2025.
  • The Summer School is conducted in two phases.
First phase
  • Its duration is one month.
  • A series of lecture sessions are organized in this phase.
  • The participants have to respond to all the assignments given during the lecture sessions.
  • At the end of this phase, participants have to appear for a written test.
  • Only qualifying participants are eligible for the second phase.

Second phase

  • This module contains research-oriented project works supervised by the Mentors. Each eligible participant has to complete the project work (as a team) within one month time, in association with the assigned Mentor.
  • There is weekly evaluation of the project work.
  • At the end of the second phase (July, 2025), participants have to submit the write-up on the progress of their project work as well as to appear for online oral presentation. Each such participant is awarded a participation certificate.
  • The Summer School ends at this point.
Internship
  • Participants with significant contribution in their projects can pursue the research work with their respective mentors to get a final shape of the work. This may require involvement of additional four months.
  • Only after completion of the project and submission of the outcome as a research article, a candidate can get the internship completion certificate subject to endorsement from the mentor.

We are an open Research Group who loves Cellular Automata. Our objective is to help you enhance your knowledge about CAs, update you on the trending research topics and to initiate and encourage further discussions on them. If you are a research aspirant and wants to learn CA, feel free to explore and connect with us. If you are an experienced researcher in this field, we invide you to join us in this endeavor.

Summer School Testimonials

  • Saatvik Sankar Ram (NIT Trichy)

It is a novel topic that is being explored very enthusiastically and taught very well. I feel the enthusiasm of the professors really help the students meld well with the topic.
I feel the topics for the project could be explained more clearly when it is offered to the students. The jump from the topics being taught to the skills required for the topics is way too large in my opinion.

  • The school was a great opportunity for a persons working in cellular automata theory. I learned new aspects and It was very fruitful for me.
1-/ I would prefer if the time for the projects can be extended for more than a month.
2-/ It would be more intersting to distinguish people that are already familiar with CA from the others when it about home works, like the ones that are familiar have to have exercices or programs that are more harder than others. And the ones that have backgrounds can be forbidden from the lectures section where they only can pass kind of test to evaluate them and then decide if they can skip the lectures and start directly working on their projects.

  • Research projects were the best part of the school.
I had a very fruitful experience with the program, every project I work on I envision use of cellular automata in it , research experience gained through the program has been helping in my other projects too .

  • Anything good about the school: Courses

  • A very organized school with a very collaborative team and discuss very interested topics.
It was a really interested experience full of information and new knowledge. I would like to be able to complete my work with them and participate in the conference, but unfortunately I could not due to my commitments with thesis defense. Now, I am thinking seriously of return back to the courses and the informations we got during the school period and study it again, and why not completing the work.

  • The Summer School has changed the course of my life. No matter how many times I say this, it will never be enough. I not only did learn about cellular automata, but I live it every day now. This is where I see art, poetry, life, and creation. I am grateful from the bottom of my heart.
The summer school curriculum is well-structured. Mentors are very helpful. But I, personally, am not very fluent in programming languages. Therefore, it would have been slightly better if more pen-and-paper assignments were given.
    Experience: Life Changing.

  • The in-depth teachings on every topic before starting the project were truly impressive. Additionally, the thorough evaluation of all assessments motivated us to put forth our best effort.

  • The Summer School on Cellular Automata 2024 opened my mind towards the research . I learnt many new things like how to work on a research project and to write a research paper. Also I was able to learn Cellular Automata technology which was a new field for me from experienced professors.
The assignments given were fun and challenging and the professors were very responsive and supportive.
My overall experience was good . The school helped me gain knowledge on cellular automata which I continue to apply in my upcoming projects like my honours project in my college and BTech project . Sukantha sir's class was very interesting. He was very experienced and good at teaching and also solving our silliest doubts . My mentor Srinivas Rao sir also was very good in guiding us through our experiments and finally we were able to submit our research paper at the journal of Complex Systems .The paper got accepted on August 2025 and looking forward for its publication in the next review. The school is a good place to start anyone's research journey and to gain good knowledge on cellular automata .I thank every mentors of the school for giving me such an opportunity.

  • The cellular automata research area is new for me. So from summer school, I got a good basic knowledge.
I searched for some online platforms, such as NPTEL, to learn the basics of cellular automata. But there are no such platforms with topics from cellular automata. So by doing this summer school, I studied the basics of cellular automata and implemented them in Python. I was very thankful for organizing summer school because it helped me a lot with my research.

  • The Indian Summer School on Cellular Automata greatly supported my Ph.D. by strengthening my foundations in CA and its applications. Under the mentorship of Dr. Sukanya and Dr. Kamalika mam, I worked on isomorphism, which shaped parts of my doctoral research and publications. The structured theory sessions, projects, and collaborative discussions enhanced my analytical skills and provided both knowledge depth and research confidence for my Ph.D. progress.
In my view, incorporating industry-oriented projects in PRNGs, quantum computing, and related applications would further enhance the program’s impact.
I attended the Indian Summer School for Cellular Automata (2022), gaining advanced exposure to CA theory and applications while collaborating with peers and experts, which shaped my doctoral research directions.

  • It was an amazing experience and I got to learn a lot from the experts in the field.
I got to learn a lot from the school, it was an incredible introduction to a very interesting field and I had a lot of fun collaborating with like minded individuals.

  • Anything good about the school: great
    Experience: Good

  • The opportunity to participate in Summer School 2022 and 2023 was amazing, and I am glad to be working with Dr. Kamalika Bhattacharjee. I have gathered a ton of new knowledge on cellular automata. In one work, we dealt with an immediate issue, namely the spread of a deadly virus (Corona virus). I was extremely excited to do such a study job in this field. I would like to thank the organizing committee of the school. It was a great experience.
